January Faith Assembly
The sixth grade presented the January faith assembly this past week and we took another imaginary field trip to heaven to meet with a very important saint, St. Paul. St. Paul didn’t always follow Jesus, and actually he worked to persecute Christians when it was illegal to follow Jesus. God decided to work through Paul, but it took a near tragedy for Paul to realize what God wanted for him. Paul was knocked off a horse and became blind when he suddenly heard God’s voice. He knew that he needed to change his ways, and so he did. We can learn from Paul that even when we make bad choices, we can give in, turn back, and be sorry – and there will be forgiveness and love and help.

Christmas Caroling
December Faith Assembly – St. Bernadette
The sixth grade took us on another imaginary trip to heaven to meet another very famous saint St. Bernadette. She grew up very poor and was very sickly as a child. Mary appeared to her 18 times and once told her to dig in the dirt and up sprang a natural spring. The water from this spring is still flowing today and is said to have healing powers. Mary told Bernadette in one appearance when she was asked who she was, she responded that she was the Immaculate Conception. We have a special connection to St. Bernadette because of our church and school name, and we now better understand why the name of our special meeting room at the school is the Lourdes Room. Bernadette did not have an easy life and it was made more difficult when people didn’t believe that Mary had really appeared to her; many people thought she was crazy. We can learn to be believers just like St. Bernadette.

November Faith Assembly – St. Anne and St. Joachim
The sixth graders made another imaginary trip to the gates of heaven to talk to some very important saints. St. Anne and St. Joachim were Mary’s mother and father. They lived most of their life without having children, until they were blessed with having Mary. They felt so lucky to have had the gift of a daughter, that they offered her to the Lord. As we know, Mary later became the mother of Jesus and lived her life in honor of God. These saints teach us patience and enduring love of the Lord.

CLISTA HELLWARTH RECEIVES MITCH RICHARDS AWARD
The Mitch Richards Award has been presented annually to a sixth grader at I.C.’s annual Sixth grade recognition ceremony since 1994. This special recognition, which includes $400 in savings bonds, was established by Mrs. Patty Niekamp, in memory of her late husband, Mitch Richards. Mitch honorably served the people of Celina as a police officer, and he encouraged respect and discipline in young people. He and Patty chose IC School for their own children, Kellie and Ryan, because of IC’s spiritual environment as well as its academic quality, and after Mitch’s death, Patty initiated this award as a gift to the students of our school to honor his memory.
This year’s recipient was Clista Hellwarth. Clista is a kind, generous, self-motivated student. She always does her best in her school work and treats every person with respect. She is a willing volunteer who goes beyond what is asked of her. She never complains about what she is asked to do and is a wonderful role model for younger students.
Clista’s name will be added to the plaque that contains the names of past recipients:

I.C. SCHOOL PTO SCHOLARSHIP
The Immaculate Conception School PTO have selected Ashley Coon and Nate Loughridge as the recipients of the I.C. PTO Scholarship for 2011. Ashley and Nate have each received a scholarship for $1000 to use to further their education at a school of their choice.
Ashley states in her essay, “I believe my Catholic education has molded me into the person I am today. Learning how to act in a kind, loving, and respectful manner at a young age has shaped me into an individual with these qualities……My catholic education has not only affected my life spiritually, but has additionally brought on other advantages. The learning advancement and higher grading scale provided at I.C. has set higher standards for me as I reached the public school – academically, socially, and in sports. Making the honor roll all four years, seated in advanced placement classes, voted junior and senior class officer, holding a chairman position on student council,….earning twelve varsity letters, and voted homecoming queen are a few of my accomplishments as the result of the discipline, kindness, love, and respectful manners taught to me as a child at I.C. School.”
Nate’s essay includes the following statements: “As children at Immaculate Conception we were taught that God loves us and that He will always love us in everything that we do and that with Him we can succeed. This is a statement that has always remained with me, and I have no doubt that it will continue to be a source of inspiration the rest of my life……Immaculate Conception is a “Faith in Action” school that has taught me what it truly means to be not only a good Catholic, but also a good Christian and a good person. Thank you Immaculate Conception School for encouraging me, giving me spiritual guidance and a great education, and for helping to make me who I am today. Christ is the true reason for the school. God Bless You All and Everyone Who Supports I.C. School.”
Ashley is the daughter of Tom and Kathy Coon. During her high school years, Ashley has been involved in soccer, cross country, swimming, track, student council, principal advisory council, varsity “C” club, student honor council, fellowship of Christian athletes, Spanish Club, physical trainer, and the secretary of her junior and senior class. In addition to her school activities, she has volunteered in the Mercer County Hospital “Volunteen” program, as a church lector and nursery worker. She has been active as a youth ministry core team member, a server, a spiritual survivor leader, and a parish festival volunteer. She has worked as a life guard, swim coach, babysitter, soccer referee, and concession stand worker.
Nate is the son of Bill and Lisa Loughridge. During his years at CHS, Nate has been active in soccer, basketball, Young Republicans, Spanish club, German club, JETS Engineering Team, National Honor Society, Spirit Squad, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He has volunteered at the hospital and soup kitchen, among others. He has worked as a youth sports camp instructor, babysitter, lifeguard and doing maintenance. Nate has received many awards for his academic successes including the 2008 Freshman Student of the Year, 2009 Sophomore Student of the Year, 2010 Junior Student of the Year, the Franklin B. Walter Award.
Immaculate Conception PTO provides two scholarships each year to students who went to I.C. School through the sixth grade. Scholarship applications consider the achievements and activities of students as well as their continued activities and services to Immaculate Conception Parish. The students are asked to write an essay describing how their education at Immaculate Conception has made a difference in their continued education. Immaculate Conception School is a faith-based educational alternative for students in grades Preschool through 6th grade. For more information about I.C. School, visit our website: www.icschool-celina.org or call 419-586-2379.
Immaculate Conception School would like to honor Marilyn Pax as our Volunteer of the Month for the month of May. Marilyn has shared her love of books with I.C. students from grades 1 through 5 for the past 16 years. “I look forward to reading to the children. They are so enthusiastic to listen to my books – books that have a message.” The Second Graders always look forward to Wednesdays. Mrs. Pax says she does too!
Marilyn is also a volunteer in the School’s cafeteria (for 20 years), is a cook for the parish funerals, and is active as an officer in the Altar Rosary Society. She and her husband Dave are proud of their three daughters who all attended I. C. School.
Mrs. Pax suggests that any book written by Patricia Polacco would be an excellent choice to share with your children. I. C. School is very thankful for all the time and dedication that Mrs. Pax shares with our students!
To go along with the Wizard of Oz theme, a yellow brick road was constructed throughout the school year. A yellow brick could be added to the road when a 5th or 6th grade student completed a book they had read. Here, several sixth grade girls pose in front of our yellow brick road. Over 200 books were read throughout the year! Awesome reading!!!
Immaculate Conception School sixth graders Hailey Langenkamp, Lauren McDonough, Clista Hellwarth, and Ashtyn Phlipot were the recipients of the Presidential Academic Award for earning an A average in all their subjects throughout the year. These awards were given during a graduation ceremony on the last day of school.

APRIL VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH
I.C. School has chosen to honor Brenda Robinson and Janet Ramsey as volunteers of the month for April. Janet and Brenda have been cleaning, painting, and redecorating several rooms in our school. They have brightened things up a great deal and made us all even more proud of our wonderful school. Their generosity, energy, and hard work are all very appreciated! We also give a big “Thank You” to the Eagles for donating most of the paint for these projects.
Brenda Robinson is the mother of 5 present and former I.C. students: Kaitlin, Renee, Nathan, Ashley, and John. They are the fourth generation to attend I.C. School. Brenda states, “ It is great to be a part of great history. There are so many great educators and students that have walked these halls and still are today. I don’t take the past efforts of our elders for granted. I feel as if I’m doing God’s work and it’s all for the kids. This school is the best thing ever going for Immaculate Conception Parish. GOOO Spartans!”
Janet Ramsey’s children attended I.C. School several years ago, and she has been volunteering in various capacities around the school since she retired in 2002. In addition to volunteering in the school cafeteria and helping with these decorating projects, she volunteers with Vacation Bible School, as a wedding assistant for the parish, sings with the funeral choir, and as a lector. Her talents and generosity are a blessing to I.C. School and I.C. Parish!

Girls Basketball Team 2011 (grades 4,5 and 6) Thank you to the Coaches Carey Luebke and Tom Rable!
The Immaculate Conception sixth grade students took a field trip to Chiefs supermarket to learn about the importance of eating and cooking healthy food and snacks. Mrs. Rosita Drexler wrote up a grant to make this experience possible. The kids helped with several healthy snack recipes and took a tour of the store and even behind the scenes. Each set of family-group captains will choose a recipe, shop for ingredients, and then prepare the healthy snack with their family groups here at school!
I.C. March Volunteer of the Month – March
Immaculate Conception School would like to honor Barb Phares as the volunteer of the month for March. Barb has served as the chairperson of the PTO’s semi-annual pizza, sub, and burrito sales for the past ten years. She began working with the pizza sales when her oldest son, Sam was in kindergarten, and took over as the chairperson a year later. She has done an outstanding job of organizing every step of the sales from order blanks to ordering materials to organizing the labor on the day of the sale. She sees it as a way she can give back to the school. Working at the sale has been a great way to get to know other parents and get more involved in the parish.
Barb has served as an Extension Educator for 4-H Youth Development for the past 29 and one half years, 25 of those years for the Ohio State University Extension. She is the county director for the Extension. She and her husband Kent have been married for 29 years, and Barb is the mother of two children. Sam is a freshman at Celina High School and Rebecca is a sixth grader at Immaculate Conception School.
Barb makes the following statement about Immaculate Conception School: “The school is well worth the investment! My son is doing well in school due to his wonderful preparation at I.C. The small class sizes, caring staff, and Christ-centered education have been a real plus for both of my children. The students have countless opportunities to develop leadership and public speaking skills.”
I.C. School and PTO thank Barb for her years of service to this project!

The kindergarten at Immaculate Conception School invited their grandparents to school for March 17. One of the things that they did together was to make a leprechaun. They also had snack together and then entertained them with a program. At the end the kindergarten asked the grandparents to dance with them. It was a day that they will all remember!
The kindergarten are learning to work together as a team. Here is one huge dinosaur that Conor Krogman, Taylor Klingshirn, Payton Bertke and Ian Kennedy painted and cut out together. They named their dinosaur Buddy and he is 100 years old. If you visit the kindergarten you can see Dinosaur Land too.
Ty Drexler was delighted to have his grandmother be with him for Grandparents day on March 17 at Immaculate Conception School. Grandma helped him to make a leprechaun and then had popcorn and cookies with him. Later she watched the children entertain with poems, songs, dance and act out the story of the Finding of Jesus in the Temple.
