Welcome to Second Grade!!!

Hi! My name is Carol Mertz. I graduated from Miami University in 1988 and taught
2nd and 3rd grade in Hilliard, Ohio, before moving back to Celina in 1999. This
is my third year teaching at I.C. School, but I have been actively involved
since 1999 as a parent. My husband, Chuck, and I have three children. I feel
blessed to have the youngest two still here with me at I.C. But the oldest has
moved on to middle school.
Second Grade is such an exciting year! I have been given the great privilege of sharing with parents the responsibility of preparing their children to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. The boys and girls are so eager and excited to receive God's forgiveness and participate fully in the celebration of mass each week.

In addition to growing in faith and love for one another, second grade is a time of growing independence and academic learning. Many students begin reading chapter books. They learn 2-digit addition and subtraction and new strategies for problem solving. Cursive writing is introduced after the first year. They can hardly stand the wait! A trip to Ft. Wayne Children's Zoo in the spring is always a favorite one too.
